Technological advancements have imposed social, economical and environmental consequences that are far from being always positive. Industrial revolution, Green Revolution, Digital revolution…The trail of Misery left by such events should not be seen as a necessary price to pay for Progress.
Time after time, entire livelihoods have been destroyed, households broken apart, and societal unrest erupted, leading to numerous episodes of violence and terror. And in each time, the multiplicity of experiences that we call life was progressively reduced to a mere role to be played in a societal nonsensical charade.
Right up to this point, here. Now. When we are not special, until we specialize in something. Something useful. Something that makes good money. Something that stands out. Something that makes you special.
Be a specialist of something. Of anything. Invent new things, so you can be the ultimate specialist at it. Create new specialists, specialized in what you are special. Teach them, educate them, coach them. Tell them that they can also be special. One day, if they work very hard.
Be a specialist, or you won’t have a chance in the world out there. Be a specialist, so you can compete with the other so-called specialists. How dare they? There can be only one! Be a specialist in defeating the other specialists, in removing them out of your path towards becoming supremely Special.
Be a specialist, so you can have one topic in which your opinion is heard, valued, respected. A special tribe of your own, with special rules, created by the top specialists. Be a specialist so you don’t have to bother with other stuff. Be a specialist so you don’t question what you don’t know, because you couldn’t possibly know. You are not a specialist at that.
Be a specialist, so that you can one day be special at being normal. At wanting the same things, having the same goals, the same purposes, that everybody else.
But before you get there, before you reach the top of the pyramid, something unthinkable happens. You are a specialist of something that no longer has value. You’ve been replaced by technology. A much more capable, productive, reliable specialist. One that doesn’t want to be special. No special treatment, special demands, special requirements.One that will help Progress like nothing before it.
And you, and so many like you, are nothing but numbers to be hidden deep in some special international report, stories to be forgotten. Specialists in failing to adapt. Discarded by the Freedom of the Fittest.
It’s time to break that cycle. It’s time to take a hold on the impacts that irresponsible technological scaling takes place in this hypocritical globalized scenario.
It’s never about the tools. It’s about the societal context in which they are created, deployed, used.
Don’t specialize to be normal. Humanize to be Special. Establish your individuality by what you do, not what societal standards impose on you. You are not a number. Your unique tale of magnificence is what makes you special.
It’s time we understand that the top of the pyramid is the universal basic default.
And that the age of the specialist is coming to an end.
