Information

Information is all around us.

It is the blood of the universe. It carries all the answers to all the questions.

It has substance, tangibility, shape. It is quantifiable and measurable. It encapsulates the only universal language. It holds the past, present and future.

It is found in all matter, all objects and creatures, from the largest galaxies to the smallest particles. It’s out there and in here. Waiting to be uncovered. Waiting to be decoded.

All systems – living or otherwise – interact with information, each in its own way. Never randomly. Never by chance. Purpose is clear.

They interact with the information they need to ultimately be a better system, individually and collectively. To survive, and then thrive.

Our evolution as a species is also the evolution of our interaction with information.

Our information receptors grew in complexity for billions of generations. And when we were biologically and socially ready, imagination surged to transform information into knowledge.

A knowledge we then use to search for more information.

In this sense, life is the optimal information container. Understand life, and the gates of knowledge will open effortlessly.

But even more: what’s really remarkable is that life also creates new information. It’s not just about uncovering the Past. It’s about securing an opportunity for each creature to produce its own story. To be more than a number. To add to the universe.

Adaptation is the current known optimal use of information. It’s the evolutionary imperative. Adapt or be extinct.

On earth, our species adapted to become even more adaptable. To be able to capture more information. Imagination feeds off the information we access. Imagine, create tools to capture, register and store information, and it becomes knowledge. Knowledge which is used to expand the limits of our search for more information.

And we are a young species at it. Still new to the universe. Still trying to figure it out. At best, we are in our early-teens.

Like any human teenager, we still have all our life ahead. Like in any life, we’ll face great challenges, and experience extreme joy. We’ll have tough decisions to make, sacrifices to endure and sometimes, face terrible tragedy. There’s no way around that.

But no one can say for sure. No one can look at a teenager and say what will become of her, with absolute certainty. Many have tried. And always failed.

Maybe we will fail, as a species. Maybe our extinction is the end game.

But it’s far from being a done deal. And it’s all up to us.

We just need to adapt better. Be better, and come up with a way to face the adulthood in front of us.

All the information we require to do so, it’s out there. Waiting to be decoded.

The Biocrat.
